Handoffs that survive annual leave

Colleagues collaborating with notebooks open

Evidence cycles ignore out-of-office replies. When a reviewer disappears mid-challenge, the pack either stalls or a colleague guesses at context. Neither outcome is fair to the control owner waiting on the other side.

Two fields that matter

Primary owner and covering owner. Not a distribution list. Covering owners need read access before leave starts, plus a one-paragraph state note: what is waiting, what has been challenged, and what must not be re-requested.

Status words with definitions

If “pending” means both “we asked” and “we are thinking,” handoffs fail. Publish a five-word status glossary beside your compliance evidence review app or spreadsheet. Train new joiners on those words before they touch live tickets.

Leave as a design constraint

Plan sample depths with known absences in mind. A heroic personal queue is not a resilient process. Teams that treat leave as an exception will keep rediscovering the same breakage every August and December.
